Which side of the fence are you on?

How do you feel about "Christian Rock" music? Does it belong in the Church? Is it okay to listen to in your "down time"? Do your kids listen to it?

Consider this statement made by a very popular "Christian Rock" artist:

"... the only difference [between rock and Christian rock] is the lyrics and then the difference is sometimes subtle ... at the basic root, there’s no difference. ... Christianity is about rebellion. JESUS CHRIST IS THE BIGGEST REBEL TO EVER WALK THE FACE OF THE EARTH ... he was crucified for his rebellion. ROCK ‘N’ ROLL IS ABOUT THE SAME THING--REBELLION ... TO ME ROCK AND THE CHURCH GO HAND IN HAND" (Mark Stuart of Audio Adrenaline, Pensacola News Journal, Pensacola, Florida, March 1, 1998, pp. 1,6E).

This is the sentiment echoed by many "Christian Rock" artists. Do you agree? Why or why not? Join the discussion, please. I'm interested to know your thoughts.

I'll post my response to this statement on Saturday.

I view Christian Rock like any other kind of music. Does it sound good...musically and lyrically? As far as in the church, I think it depends on what kind of church you attend. Some people attend a more 'by the book' church because it speaks to their heart. I don't think some Rock music would do anything for them spiritually or entertain them even. Others prefer to attend a more edgey church because it suits their spirit. Those type of people can be lifted up by Skillet as much as by U2. (I'm sure there are middle ground groups as well...I just took the extremes.)

On a personal note...I'm more of the later group. I don't do it to be radical, but I feel the need to stay as far away from "in the box" views as much as possible. It is purely a personal position.

hmmm...this is such an interesting question that I haven't really, seriously thought about since all the fervor about Amy Grant making the "cross-over" into the secular music world. I was young and very into the whole thing then. Now my oldest is 13 and since I homeschool, he isn't exposed to the issue nearly as much as he could be. But it's coming and it's already something I know I need to start really thinking about again so that I know where I stand when I want to enforce music rules with him. That is such an interesting quote on your blog too. Hmmm...like I said, I need to really think about this some more. Oh, I homeschool 3 kids and love scrapbooking too...we have a lot in common. I am looking forward to reading more of your blog!

There's a seeker church in my city I've attended a few times that plays actual rock music - not even Christian rock, just regular top-40 tunes (do they still have the Top 40? I'm old). The problem I have with it isn't that it is somehow contaminating but rather that this kind of music (no matter what the lyrics) places the church-goer into the position of spectator: corporate worship shouldn't be something we WATCH, it should be something we DO.
