Forget 12 step progams. Try my more simple 2-step program.

When I moved from Alaska to Texas, I paid to just a little over $4000 to ship 2 pallets of my clothes and shoes down, along with a few baby things and some household items. Four. Thousand. Dollars. File that under "What was I thinking?"

You see, I had a serious addiction to shoes and nice clothes. I had worked for a specialty retail store as a buyer for 7 years and over that time, I had accumulated quite an array of Donna Karan sportswear, Classiques suits, and enough pairs of Via Spiga and Nine west shoes to keep the Imelda Marcos happy for at least two weeks. 72 pair to be exact. Of course, that was before I had three kids. And before I quit my cushy job where I made lots of money to be a sahm who spends most of her time barefooted.

Oh. And before my feet had the audacity to betray me and grow themselves right into a size 10 after only two of three pregnancies. So there you have it -- my simple two step plan (which is technically a three step plan, but two-step just sounded better). Now someone else has those shoes and I miss them. I was reading one of Karla's latest entries at Looking Towards Heaven and it elicited a chuckle from me. I have always strived to maintain a sense of conservatism in my dress (read -- no flashy colors or trendy clothing). I always purchase clothing that is considered "classic" because, by golly, if I'm going to spend $300 on it, I don't want it going out of style before I've worn it two or thirty times!

The only exception I've ever made in my dress is my shoes. I love crazy shoes. I had no less than 40 pair of funky, crazy, colorful shoes. Why? Because you can only have so many blacks - casual, dressy, high-heeled, no-heel...you get my drift, right? While I might not have worn anything as uncomfortable looking as this:

I totally would have opted for something that was still a little more fashion-forward, while sacrificing a little of the comfort if the shoe was as cute as this pair:

There's also these, but I'm still not sure about those boots. Something about a boot without a heel just doesn't set sit set right with me. What do you think?

Alrighty, then. We may not all be on the same page when it comes to our shoes, but there is one thing I believe we just might agree on. It sure was stupid to spend $4000 to ship my clothes and shoes to Texas, huh?

love love love these shoes. the first pair is my favorite. those boots look like i'd just fall over and land on my bum! i mean, i know most of your weight is on the balls of your feet when you wear heels, but not all!

p.s. -- i also am (currently) somewhat addicted to shoes. mine are probably less expensive, but i have about the same # as you did. just gotta love me some shoes!

You may not feel so stupid about your $4000 expenditure when you hear what happened to my clothes when I move to Washington from California.

Stolen while in the possession of the moving company.

Boxes filled with Ann Taylor and Kenneth Cole New York....gone.
Wonderful, newish never go out of style classy pieces gone.

Luckily we had movers insurance, and I had kept all my receipts, so I got my money back, but those clothes....irreplaceable and gone.
