Faithful to my Music

My musical tastes have always been very eclectic. I grew up listening to everything from CCR to George Strait. In high school, I really branched out and went alternative (well, at the time it was alternative) - The Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, Cyndi Lauper, Adam Ant...I was "one of those" kids with the lopsided hair cut and the cool checkered Vans. Trendsetter, yes I was.

Then I grew up and had a family and gave up almost all of that music. Why? Well, the reasons are purely personal, and I would never try to stand in judgment of anyone who listens to something different, but I will tell you that I don't listen to anything that doesn't have a positive message these days. I have found that music has a profound influence on my moods and with 3 little ones watching my every move, I have to be careful not to have "down" days. Because my children are homeschooled, I don't get the conventional 8am - 3pm break in my day to do "mom" things or to let my hair down. I am always "on" and consequently, I have to be upbeat as often as possible - in other words, I need to try to exhibit the "fruit of the Spirit" for them. To a lot of my friends, I am probably so "uncool" - and since I'm totally a relationship-oriented, that aspect is difficult for me. Especially when they start talking about American Idol and I have no clue who's who. Up until recently, I thought there was someone named "Clay Clarkson"...oh yes, I did. (sorry Shari!)

So here's two songs that I love, for their message. These two groups have been around for a while, and I'm probably not introducing you to anyone you don't know, but nevertheless, it's Music Monday, doggonit and I'm going to participate. :)

The first is by Phillips, Craig and Dean - it's called "Let My Words be Few":

The second is by Casting Crowns and is called "The Voice of Truth":

So what music do you love that you don't want to admit to? Go here for more confessions or to enter yours.

I pretty much gave up music too after becoming a homeschool mom. My kids know all the lyrics to the songs on Journey's Greatest Hits, and most Weird Al songs, and definitely everything on the local Christian pop station, but I rarely listen to anything anymore. Not really any reason. Hmm. Food for thought.

But the positive attitude all the time? I like it that my kids see my grouchy and down sometimes. When I'm grouchy and snap at them, I think it helps to tell them that it's me, not them. And when I'm down (which isn't often), they see I'm real, sometimes hurting. And that that's okay and that it doesn't last forever. That I can relate to them when they're down. Especially homeschooling, it's difficult being "on" all the time. It comes out somewhere else eventually.

Sorry. I'm struggling right now with just "being" and everything that comes with it.
