The Breakfast of Champions

About once every two weeks, I make something for my kids that is totally unhealthy, makes them super-hyper and probably contributes to cavitites. (and then I send them to Grandma's - oh I kid.)

I grew up on this particular breakfast treat - my mother used to make it for me on Saturday mornings and I can still remember sitting in front of my Saturday morning cartoons eating a hot piece of cinnamon toast.

Of course, I call it cinnamon toast because it sounds less threatening. My mother-in-law calls it sugar toast...which sounds like I'm a horrible mother if I feed it to my kids. Personally, I don't see much difference between this and cake or say, pancakes for breakfast. A pancake is just a cake with syrup substituted for the frosting, right?

Cinnamon Toast

8 slices bread (your favorite kind - it does not matter)
8 pats of butter or margarine
sugar
cinnamon

~Turn your oven's broiler on HIGH.

~Lay your bread out on a cookie sheet and spread enough butter over each piece so that you have a nice thin covering. (It's hard to say how much - too much and your bread gets soggy, too little and your sugar doesn't carmelize - so you might have to play with it)

~Sprinkle enough sugar to hide the butter (not a thick layer, but about the same thickness of the butter you spread - you want consistency if you can acchieve it)

~Sprinkly a generous amount of cinnamon all over the sugar- pile it on, because this is what makes it taste good. (would I lie to you?)

~Place in broiler and watch until the sugar starts to bubble (usually about 3-6 minutes) and the butter, sugar and cinnamon are carmelized.

~Remove and carefully place on a plate. Let it cool down before giving it to your kids, because even when the topside isn't hot, the steam from the underside can burn.

~Enjoy! The breakfast of champions.

So I'm curious...have any of you ever eaten this or had a variation of this? What do YOU call it?

Oh yes, we used to have this as a kid. I love it with a big ol glass of cold milk! Yum! That being said, I rarely give it to my kids because it makes them so hyper! Bad mommy, I know!

Oh, and we called it the same as you - Cinnamon Toast.

My dad used to keep a baggy with the cinnamon and sugar already pre-mixed in the cabinet over the toaster. Cinnamon toast was a staple at our house.

I used to have this as a kid, but we toasted the bread first in the toaster and then spread everything on. So the sugar was not carmelized - that sounds really good! I'll have to try it your way. We also called it cinnamon toast and used to have it as a cheap dessert.

I mix the sugar and cinnamon first and then sprinkle it on. We call it cinnamon toast also.

I inherited my mother's sweet tooth - I was raised on cinnamon toast, too.

You're making me hungry!!!

The closest I've ever come is toasting bread, buttering it, and sprinkling cinnamon and sugar. Ha! Ha! Might have to try this sometime. :D

Sounds delicious and so quick and easy. I believe we may be trying this sometime this weekend :) Thanks so much!

This was/is my very favorite breakfast. My mom made it for me when I was a kid! Only we put the cinnamon on first, then topped it with sugar......mmmmm. The carmelization of the sugar was/is the very bestest part!

Our broiler was on the bottom of the stove and oven when I was a kid (about kindergarten age) I remember laying on my belly watching the toast cook in the mornings before school! We ate our toast with milk to drink, but on really cold days mom would serve it with hot chocolate to drink & I would dip my toast in the cocoa!

Thanks for bringing back such happy memories!

we had cinnamon sugar toast just like lora lynn. even now (with just my husband and i) we have a cinnamon sugar shaker. toast the bread, spread the butter, and shake on some cinnamon sugar.

your version sounds definitely worth a try!

I LOVE cinnamon toast! We had it all the time growing up. Maybe I'll make it for my house full of boys in the morning. :)

We call it cinnamon toast, also. I've never had it done in the broiler, just toasted, spread with butter, then sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. Always thought it was yummy, but I will have to try your method.

Are you kidding? I make this like once a week for myself. Although I do share with Bear. I use country crock spread instead of real butter and a lot of sugar. Yum. I call it cinnamon toast.

We call this cinnamon toast at our house too. Yum. I may have to go make some after your post!

This was one of my favorite treats as a kid, too! My kids don't have the patience to wait for the broiler, though. They just make toast, butter it, and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on it. It's just not the same, though!

I love cinnamon toast and had it often as a kid. I love it as an occasional treat as an adult also. Yummy!

YES! We ate Cinnamon Toast all the time when I was a kid! LOVED IT! And yes, I did make it for my kids too. They are both grown and living on their own now but they still make it at their own homes.

We did the broiler method but kept the sugar and cinnamon pre-mixed in a jar (actually the jar my mom used to use - I got it from her house when she passed).

Thanks for the memories! I think I'll go make some cinnamon toast for DH & me right now!

This is a favorite around our house, too. It's so quick and easy.

We ate something like this as kids but a bit more simple. We put the bread in the toaster then added butter and cin/sugar. My brother was to impatient to toast so he buttered plain bread and then added sugar.

We always toasted ours in a toaster and used premixed sugar and cinnamon.
I found the cutest little glass bear shaker to keep it in! It looks like something from the 50's. We always called it cinnamon toast.
A variation of it my mom came up with to help us (as kids) pretend we were having french toast (maybe we ran out of eggs or couldn't afford them), was to sprinkle cinnamon sugar on toast and then pour black coffee on it! Might sound disgusting but it actually didn't taste bad. =)

You asked about what we had as a nutritional powerhouse growing up. My dad was Our Hero with that. He is usually a real stickler for good food, but he had his favorite sugar bomb recipes as well. We used to love to go hiking with him and at lunch we'd sit down to peanut butter and butter sandwiches. Talk about calories! He'd mix peanut butter and butter half and half and boy, was it light tasting and delicious. No need for jam or anything else. Delicious. And sugar sandwiches. Yeah, my dad was awesome. He'd mix butter and brown sugar and that was the sandwich filling. And strangely, not a one of us ever had a cavity. Those were great days. I kind of hate to pass on that legacy though, so my kids have never had either one. Is that sad?

We are BIG TIME Cinnamon Toast Consumers here at the Clem Domicile. It is the first breakfast my older kids learned to fix, and it is what they will make when they bring me breakfast in bed. Oh, how I love those little darlin's! Come to think on it, it's been a little too long since the last batch of cinnamon toast. Guess what they'll be making for me tomorrow? YUM!

Yes, sugar toast. My MawMaw used to make it for us when we were kids. A great memory to be sure.

I'm behind and just catching up...yes! Cinnamon taost rocks! I made it for a late night snack a few weeks agoa and my husband and I laughed so hard over eating it as kids! It has to be broiled until the sugar starts to get a little crispy to be just right, with lots of butter under the sugar and cinammon. Yummy!
