Like a Thief in the Night...

What's worse than locking yourself out of the car?

Try locking yourself out of the house when you live in the country...no house key, no cell phone, no tools, nothing. Nada.

Yep. Last night was a stellar night in our neck of the woods. A little backstory:

We have been driving my mom's van while she's out of state visiting one of my brothers in Colorado and interestingly enough, it does not have a key to our house on it. Imagine that. So we've had to remember to carry a set of our keys along with her keys if we were driving her van.
Obviously, we forgot.

Well, my husband remembered. Or so he thought. You see, he had left his set of keys in my mom's van the night before "just in case", but unbeknownst to him, I had brought them inside when I came home, because I thought to myself, "Self, that's just not like him to leave keys in the car - you'd better take those inside".

Now, I must admit that I also heard another little voice inside my head (conscience?) saying, "Nah..just leave them in here...in case you lock yourself out or something..." to which I quickly responded (out loud, I must say), "Pshaw! We're not going to lock ourselves out!"

Famous last words. Could that have been my pride speaking that last statement? Sigh...

So we spent a good thirty minutes trying all the windows and discussing what the most economical thing to do was - call a locksmith (ugh...no phones), break a window, or replace the door knob and lock. So we eventually "broke" into our own house with two heavy-duty screwdrivers that my brother had loaned my husband (we hadn't returned them yet - one point for procrastination!) and messed up our back door. It's ugly and will need to be fixed, but at least we didn't have to spend the night in the car. Oh, and it still locks, too.

I am not, however, feeling too secure at this point. Two bumbling adults in the middle of the black night were able to break in to our house within a matter of 15 minutes. Never mind that it was us.

I'd install a deadbolt, but what if we lock ourselves out again?

(and that photo up top has absolutely nothing to do with this story...it is a photo of the "road" that leads into our feed lot at my husband's family farm, where his mom lives. And I doctored it in Photoshop CS3 to have the curved frame around it - see what you can do with Photoshop CS3? - Enter the giveaway here)

LOL. I've had to break into my own home before, too. It's easier than most people realize. Really makes you want to call Brinks Home Security or something, doesn't it??

Oh - and maybe, since you live in the country, you can bury a key in a box under the old tree with the knot that looks like a guys face (you know, or something like that.) =P

Bless your heart ;).

You're not a goober, you're HUMAN!

Reminds me of the time I walked outside in my PJs to feed the cat (in our NEW house), the door locked behind me, hubby was at work. I woke my neighbor up at 7 a.m. (with bedhead, mind you) to borrow their phone so I could call a locksmith.

Oh, my word--this was before the advent of cell phones! I'm ancient!!

Sorry it happened, but it sure is a funny story to be read by a non-participant. LOL!!

Now, if you're my dad, this would never, ever, ever happen, cause there are always extras to EVERYthing hidden somewhere. Very stealthily hidden, too. Good in theory, I just don't remember to do anything that brilliant. :D

Okay, now I want CS3 even more. What a groovy frame. Love that look.

We got locked out of the house once because of a power outage. Got back from the store and tried to open the garage door but it wouldn't because of the no electricity factor. Then we realized that the set of keys we had grabbed didn't have a house key on it.

Luckily the power was back on an hour later otherwise we were planning on breaking a window to get back in. The warranty on our windows guarantees free replacement no matter how the window gets broken.

Oh, that is awful! I remember once my Mom locked herself out of our house. The only open window was the one above the toilet, and bless her heart she made it through.

I locked my keys in my car just this past 4th of July. It would have been so bad if I hadn't of been 8 hours from home, out in the middle of eleventy billion acre cattle ranch in New Mexico.

Thankfully there was a locksmith in their small town 25 minutes away. He informed us on the phone that he could open any vehicle (after we had to spell out V-O-L-V-O to him) and I only hoped it didn't include a crow bar or a brick. However, 10 minutes after he arrived and a crisp $100 bill later, it was open and all was well with my soul.
And yeah, I had a little voice in my head warn me not to leave the keys in the car, too.
Sometimes that voice ought to have a mega-phone.

So happy you were able to get in with out damaging too much! Maybe you should stash a key somewhere?

Oh, I'm glad I'm not the only one! Sorry for your misfortune, but I've done that...and the car...and locking the kid in the car! Oops. I blame it all on mommy brain and get regular ribbing from dear husband.
Funny post :D
